What to know */5 in the minute field means "every 5th value of the full range 0-59, starting at 0". The runs are tied to the clock, not to when you saved the crontab: if you add the job at 10:03, the first run is 10:05.
To shift the runs off the round numbers (useful when many machines would otherwise all hit a server at :00), use a range with a step: 2-59/5 runs at :02, :07, :12 … :57.
Variations
2-59/5 * * * *every 5 minutes, offset by 2 minutes At minutes 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27, 32, 37, 42, 47, 52 and 57 past every hour.
*/5 9-17 * * 1-5every 5 minutes during working hours on weekdays Every 5 minutes from 09:00 through 17:59 on Monday through Friday.
Gotchas 5 * * * * is a different schedule: once an hour, at minute 5.Steps restart every hour. That is harmless for 5 (60 divides evenly) but not for steps like 7 or 25: see */7 explained . */5 in the hour field (0 */5 * * *) gives 00:00, 05:00, 10:00, 15:00, 20:00 and then 00:00 again: the last gap is 4 hours.← Explain any cron expression
